Your waist trainer smells because sweat soaks into the side that touches your skin and mixes with the bacteria that live there. Latex and neoprene don't breathe, so that layer stays damp. Spray the inside after every wear, let it dry completely before you put it away, and hand wash it when the smell sticks.

Sweat on its own doesn't smell much. Cleveland Clinic explains that odor comes from bacteria on your skin breaking down sweat. A trainer gives that mix a warm, closed space for hours, which is why the smell builds faster than it does in a cotton tee.

Which smell do you have?

Not every smell means the same thing. Sniff the inside, then match it here.

Is the new latex smell normal?

Yes. Many latex products have a rubbery smell straight out of the bag, and a new trainer is no different. It isn't sweat and it doesn't mean anything is wrong. Open it out flat somewhere with fresh air and it should fade over the first few days of wear.

Before you air it out too long, check the size. Exchanges only cover trainers that are unworn and unwashed with tags attached, and you have 24 hours from delivery to ask. Try it on gently first, then start wearing it. The full terms are on our exchanges page.

How to get the smell out of a waist trainer

After every wear (two minutes)

  1. Take it off and open it out flat with the inside facing up.
  2. Spray the inside, where it touched your skin. Spray & Go Trainer Cleaner is a plant-based spray made for this.
  3. Let it air dry completely before you close the hooks or put it away. A drawer traps whatever moisture is left.

When the smell sticks (deep clean)

  1. Close the hooks so they don't snag the fabric.
  2. Hand wash it in cool water with a little mild soap. Rub the inside gently with your hands or a soft cloth.
  3. Rinse in clean cool water until no soap is left. Leftover soap holds smell too.
  4. Roll it in a towel and press the water out. Don't wring it.
  5. Dry it flat, away from sun and heaters, and turn it over so both sides dry.

That's the same routine as our full cleaning and care guide, which also covers what damages latex. Keep it out of the washing machine, and away from the dryer and hair dryer.

Why neoprene trainers smell faster

The Neoprene Sweat & Sculpt Trainer has a latex outer and our yellow neoprene lining, which holds heat on purpose. More heat means more sweat sitting in the lining. If you wear it for cardio, spray the lining the moment you take it off and dry it lining-side up. Don't leave it balled up in a gym bag for the drive home.

How to stop it smelling again

  • Wear a thin tank underneath. It catches most of the sweat before it reaches the trainer, and you can throw the tank in the wash.
  • Never put it away damp. This one habit prevents most musty smells.
  • Let creams soak in first. If you use a cream, massage it in and give it time to soak in before you hook in.
  • Skip perfume and fabric softener. They cover the smell for a day and can leave a coating that holds odor.
  • Give it a day off. A trainer that dries for a full day between wears stays fresher.

That last tip is why so many customers keep two trainers. One dries while you wear the other. The 2-Trainer Pro Pack sets you up with a pair in one fit and takes money off each trainer, and the Find My Fit quiz picks the size and length for both.

When the smell means it's time for a new one

If a full hand wash and a complete dry don't fix it, or you see dark spots that won't wash out, the smell is in the material. Replace it. Our post on how long a waist trainer lasts lists the other signs to look for.

Can I use vinegar to get the smell out?

We don't recommend soaking your trainer in vinegar or other home remedies. Strong solutions haven't been tested on our latex and can be hard on it. Stick to cool water, mild soap and a trainer spray, and follow the care label if it says something different.

Can I put my waist trainer in the washing machine to get rid of the smell?

No. The machine can bend the boning and damage the hooks and latex. Hand wash it in cool water instead.

How often should I wash my waist trainer?

Spray and air it out after every wear. Hand wash it when the smell lingers after airing, or after a run of sweaty workouts.

Why does my waist trainer smell even after I wash it?

Usually it wasn't fully dry before it went back in the drawer, or soap was left in it. Rinse well and let it dry flat until it's dry all the way through. If it still smells, the material may be worn out.

Does a waist trainer smell less if I wear something under it?

Yes. A thin tank or cami catches most of the sweat, and it goes in the laundry while the trainer only needs a spray.
