Your torso length decides how tall your waist trainer should be. Sit up straight and measure from the bottom of your ribs to the top of your hip bone. Under 8.5 inches, choose the 8" Short Torso. From 8.5 to 10.5 inches, choose the 10" Medium Torso. Over 10.5 inches, choose the 12" Long Torso.

Size (XS, M, 2XL and so on) is a separate choice that comes from your waist measurement. You'll find it in the size charts.

What you need

  • A soft tape measure (a phone charger cable and a ruler work too)
  • A mirror, or someone to read the tape
  • Two minutes, measuring over bare skin or a thin top

How to measure, step by step

  1. Sit up straight on a chair with your feet flat. Sitting matters: it's when a trainer that's too long starts to dig in.
  2. Find the bottom of your rib cage at your side. Press gently until you feel the lowest rib.
  3. Find the top of your hip bone on the same side.
  4. Measure the straight vertical distance between the two, in inches. Measure twice, and if you get two numbers, use the shorter one.

Which length to choose

8.5" to 10.5"10" MediumMost women
Over 10.5"12" LongTaller or long-waisted

Most women wear the 10". If you're right on a line, think about how you'll wear it. For squats and cardio, a shorter trainer gives your hips more room to move. For long days sitting, a longer one covers more of your midsection.

Signs your length is wrong

  • It pushes into your ribs or hips when you sit: it's probably too long.
  • It rolls at the top or bottom, or leaves a gap at your belly: it's probably too short, or sitting at the wrong height.

Should I measure sitting or standing?

Sitting up straight. That's the position where a too-long trainer causes trouble, so it gives the safer number.

Does a longer trainer hold more?

It covers more of your torso. How firmly it holds comes from the trainer line, not the height. Compare lines on all waist trainers.

I'm between 8.5 and 9 inches. Which do I pick?

The 10" for most people. Pick the 8" if you lift and want more room at the hips.
