A short-torso waist trainer is 8 inches tall, so it fits between your ribs and hips without rolling when you sit. You can be tall with a short torso, so measure instead of guessing. Measure from the bottom of your ribs to the top of your hip bone. Under 8.5 inches: 8". 8.5 to 10.5: 10". Over 10.5: 12".
Length is the half of waist trainer sizing most people skip. Size sets how far around the trainer goes. Length sets how tall it is. A trainer can close perfectly on the right size and still fight you all day because it's too tall for the space it has to sit in. That's why we make our core trainers in three heights.
Do I have a short torso? A 30-second check
- Sit up straight on a firm chair. Sitting matters, because that's when your torso is at its shortest.
- Find the bottom of your rib cage at your side.
- Find the top of your hip bone on the same side.
- Measure the gap between them with a soft tape, in inches.
| Ribs to hip bone | Trainer length | Our name for it |
|---|---|---|
| Under 8.5 inches | 8" | Short |
| 8.5 to 10.5 inches | 10" | Medium (most women) |
| Over 10.5 inches | 12" | Long |
Our torso length guide has photos of each step. If you land right on 8.5 inches, think about your day. If you sit a lot, at a desk, in a car or on the couch, the 8" will usually stay flatter.
Is petite the same as a short torso?
Not always. Petite describes your overall height. Torso length is the space between your ribs and your hips, and it doesn't follow height neatly. A woman who is 5'2" can have a 10" torso, and a woman who is 5'9" can have a short one with long legs.
There are a few everyday clues. High-waisted pants that come up close to your bust, belts that sit right under your ribs, or one-piece swimsuits that always feel long can all point to a short torso. They're hints. The tape measure is the answer.
What happens when a trainer is too tall
Standing in front of a mirror, a too-tall trainer can look fine. The trouble starts when you move. When you sit or bend, the space between your ribs and hips gets shorter, and the trainer has nowhere to go.
- The bottom edge folds up when it hits your hip bones as you sit.
- The top edge digs in under your bust or flips over at your ribs.
- The bottom hooks strain or pop open, because sitting pushes on them.
- You spend the day pulling it down, which is usually the first sign people notice.
Most people try a smaller size first. That rarely helps, because a smaller trainer is the same height and now presses harder. Our post on why waist trainers roll up walks through how to tell a length problem from a size problem.
How an 8" trainer fits instead
An 8" trainer covers your waist and stops short of your ribs and hip bones. You get the same snatch through the middle without the edges catching when you sit, drive or bend down to pick something up.
Short-torso customers notice the difference right away. Shelly wrote: "This 8" option is PERFECT! Fits exactly where I need it to as a short torso girl :)" Alexandra said: "The short torso length is perfect for me and the trainer is comfortable to wear for long periods of time."
Do 8-inch trainers hold less?
No. Each line is made the same way in all three lengths, with the same materials and closure. The hold comes from the line you choose, so an 8" Daily Sculpt is as firm as a 10" Daily Sculpt. It's just shorter. If anything, a trainer that fits your torso feels firmer, because it sits flat instead of folding.
Which of our trainers come in 8 inches?
| Trainer | Hold | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Active Sculpt | Medium | Workouts, cardio, a first trainer |
| Active Sculpt Designs | Medium | The Active fit in limited prints |
| Daily Sculpt | Strong | All-day wear and under clothes, in Black or Nude |
| Neoprene Sweat & Sculpt | Medium | Sweat sessions, with a warm neoprene lining |
| Triple Compression | Maximum | Experienced wearers who want the most hold |
Daily Sculpt is the one we suggest first for everyday wear, because it lies flat under clothes. Active Sculpt bends with you at the gym. Hide The Back Fat only comes in 12", so it isn't a short-torso option. You can see every 8" trainer in one place in our short torso collection.

Sizing when you're petite
Pick your length from your torso and your size from your natural waist, measured right above your belly button. Our 8" and 10" trainers share one chart, so your size stays the same if you switch between those two lengths.
| Size | Natural waist |
|---|---|
| 3XS | 19 to 21 |
| 2XS | 21 to 23 |
| XS | 23 to 26 |
| S | 26 to 29 |
| M | 29 to 31.5 |
| L | 32 to 35 |
| XL | 35 to 38 |
| 2XL | 38 to 41 |
| 3XL | 41 to 44 |
Between two sizes? Go up one for your first trainer and down one if you've worn one before. Being petite doesn't mean you need the smallest size. Size follows your waist, not your height. More on that in what size waist trainer to get.
“Amazing waist trainer and an amazing customer service! I ordered the wrong size and length originally and they made the exchange process so easy! Would recommend this company and its products to anyone I know!”
Not sure about either number? The Find My Fit quiz asks for your waist and torso and picks the trainer, length and size for you in about a minute.
Is petite the same as a short torso?
No. Petite is your overall height. Short torso is the space between your ribs and hip bone, under 8.5 inches when you sit up straight. Plenty of petite women wear a 10", and some tall women need an 8".
Can I wear a 10" trainer if I'm 5'2"?
Yes, if your torso measures 8.5 inches or more. Height alone doesn't decide it. Measure from the bottom of your ribs to the top of your hip bone.
Do 8" trainers hold less than 10" ones?
No. Each line is made the same way in every length. The 8" is shorter, with the same hold.
What if I measure exactly 8.5 inches?
Either length can work. If you sit for most of the day, choose the 8". If you're mostly on your feet and want more coverage, the 10" is fine.
Can I exchange for a different length?
Yes. Request an exchange within 24 hours of delivery and send the trainer back unworn, with tags, within 7 days. Your first exchange is free. See exchanges and returns.
